iPhone freeing up my time

I did not started my laptop since morning (Its Sunday, 1pm now). I got iPhone yesterday. I quickly realized that I login to my laptop every morning to do a very few things but due to fantastic usability of the laptop, I easily start wandaring around the Net and realize that an hour passed as few minutes. With my iPhone this morning I ran my day booting script (below is the list) within few minitues.

1. Scan Personal Email

2. Scan Company Email

3. Check Weather

4. Scan through Twitter

5. Scan through World News & India News

I am done. It took 15mins for me to finish the above. Due to the constrains in iPhone (slow keyboard, small screen, slow switching betwen applications), I priotitized and limited my interaction with Net (and saved time). iPhone had positive impact on 1st day.

I want to buy a digital camera. I am doing a lot of research on digital cameras since last 10 days. Initially I got fully confused with all the jargon (sensor size, ISO rating, Image stabilization, White balance etc.). I don’t know anything about photography but with so many models in market, I thought of understanding the differences between these cameras (other than Mega pixels) before deciding on what to buy. So, I got started.

The steps I followed:

Did some reading about cameras to understand the language of cameras
Listed the features that I understood from step 1 and which I thought are important to me
Decided my budget
Start comparing features of various models and read their reviews

These days I am in step 4 and this is what I do…

Select a model, say Sony DSC T10
Search for DSC T10 at dpreview and look for the summary of features
Search for DSC T10 at cnet to read technical review
Search for DSC T30 at amazon to read user reviews
Search for DSC T30 in any other site

Imagine doing this to every model that I liked. One search for each model in respective sites to read about it. I have been doing this for the last 15days (1 hour everyday).

Today I read about Google custom search engine . It is just perfect for my need. I wanted to search multiple sites (specific sites like dpreview, cnet, amazon) with one query (say DST T10). It took me just 10 minutes to create my custom search and I love it. Its so cool. Now I enter the camera model number in my search and results from all my specific sites are at one place. Isn’t it cool. Try searching for Sony DSC T10 with my custom search engine.

I don’t know when I will buy my new camera, but all the research I am doing about digital cameras is good learning.

blogging inspiration

Blogs are one of my knowledge points. I always search blogs first if I want to understand something (anything). Wikipedia is my favorite for content, but real learning happens only with right context. Blogs are the place where content lives in authentic context. To me its a natural way of learning.

I always wanted to have my own blog but never got started. Did a quick search (blog search of course ) to get started and found some stuff link blogging stater checklist, Art of Blogging (Part1 and Part2) but somehow I was not motivated enough to get started. May be the reason was I did not know what to write about. I was thinking that blogging is all about writing until I saw Ed Cohen’s blog. I love his photo blog. Its a great way of sharing a story. Thanks Ed for your inspiring blog that got me started.
